More details:
Following Michael Speller’s compelling talk at Surrey University, Guildford in October 2017 to Surrey Sculpture Society members and friends, we shall be visiting his studio and foundry to look more closely at his techniques with bronze and talk to him about his forthcoming projects. His iconic studio is in a set of old railway arches with the foundry just a short distance away.
Michael’s sculptures find a rhythm and balance, recognising our imperfections and counterbalancing them with positivity to discover a visual and spiritual equilibrium. He creates distinctive elongated figures which express how we live in balance with family, the community and the environment. The surface of his work is often impressed with words and letters to convey the message and meaning in his pieces.
He was official artist for the BT Art of Sport Programme for the 2012 Olympics and one of his best-known commissioned works is Encompass in Greenwich. Last year he had work in show gardens at both RHS Chelsea and Tatton, both of which won gold medals. He has been asked again to create a piece for a large show garden at RHS Chelsea 2019. His work is in many private and public collections, all over the world.
Mike was recently interviewed by BBC Front Row on his thoughts on the sculptural form of the Cutty Sark, this can be heard on BBC Sounds.
