Roland Locke is a sculptor, painter and historic building conservator whose work explores the relationship between the human form, time and transformation.

His artistic journey began many years ago through painting. Initially working in watercolour, he developed a particular love of painting birds and wildlife before moving into oils, where his subjects broadened to include landscapes, architecture and the human form. Painting established a lifelong fascination with observation, composition, anatomy and light, providing the artistic foundation upon which his sculpture has evolved.

Alongside his artistic practice, Roland has spent more than three decades specialising in the conservation and repair of Britain's historic buildings. Working with medieval timber frames, ancient oak, lime mortars and traditional craftsmanship has given him a profound appreciation of structure, materials and the marks that time leaves upon them. These experiences have become an important influence on his sculptural work.
Working primarily in stoneware clay, Roland creates figurative sculptures that seek to capture moments of quiet reflection, curiosity and personal transformation. His recent work combines careful anatomical observation with increasingly experimental ceramic surfaces, allowing flowing glazes and the firing process itself to become an integral part of each sculpture's final expression.

Rather than portraying the figure simply as an anatomical study, Roland's work explores themes of awakening, resilience, memory and possibility. Each sculpture invites the viewer to bring their own experiences and interpretations, encouraging a personal dialogue between the artwork and its audience.
For Roland, sculpture represents the meeting of two lifelong passions: the artist's search for beauty and expression, and the conservator's understanding that time, experience and change leave their own enduring marks upon every surface.
