I build motorised and hand-cranked automata along with static sculptures using cheap or free materials. I try to find objects that I can adapt to fit my work while leaving them recognisable. I tend to use materials that can be cut, shaped and fitted together with hand tools and basic power tools.

There is no specific theme to my work as such, but I started by building pieces based on endangered or extinct animals. Having said that, I have also built a Japanese archer in full armour and a church organ that plays Pachelbel’s canon in two-part harmony using old school recorders for the pipes.

I tend to use old technology to find solutions to mechanical problems, prototyping them with an old Meccano set. I prefer not to paint anything, instead I mostly rely on self-colour in the materials. The aesthetic qualities of the mechanisms are as important as the aesthetics of the pieces as a whole.
