Alan Carlyon Smith

Alan Carlyon Smith makes sculptural work in his workshop in Cheam, where he uses a range of materials but specialises in ceramics, plaster and resin. He also has a studio in Wimbledon Art Studios where he primarily paints. Often the subject matter of his sculpture and paintings share common elements and approaches.

The multi-material approach to his work was always reflected in his career as a teacher. He has a PgDip in Ceramics from Goldsmiths and an MA in Art & Design from Kingston. After retiring from teaching, his energies have been focussed on creating pieces of work for experimentation and exhibition. He shows his work twice yearly in the Wimbledon Art Fair and participates regularly in the Affordable Art Fair in Battersea and Hampstead as well as exhibiting in other London venues.

The artwork is often focussed on the figure with a degree of interpretation and he likes to celebrate diversity with a specific interest in identity. Recent pieces reflect his travelling experiences in Asia and Europe as well as other historic references. He is a frequent visitor to museums and galleries both to appreciate the exhibits and to draw inspiration for his own outcomes and responses.
