Michael Glasspool has always carved, but since taking early retirement from a career in medicine he has been able to work full time on his sculpture. He is largely self taught but has been fortunate to work with several sculptors from whom he has learnt his mould making and casting skills. Ideas for his sculptures can come from anywhere but he does not draw them, preferring to go straight to modelling. He first produces an accurate and detailed representation of the subject in wax or clay. This is then pared back until only the essence of the subject remains. Some distortion away from reality...

I started working with clay from an early age, mostly handbuilding pots but later in my teens working on the potters wheel. I relish the feel of the clay and the endless possibilities it offers for creating forms and textures. It was not until I retired from teaching that I decided to take up sculpture. My motivation comes from numerous sources but largely from a love of, and respect for, animals but also from a fascination of movement, posture and line in the human form. My aim is to capture a moment that expresses the character, spirit and vitality of my subject. I am largely self...

I am a sculptor whose work focuses on the power, beauty and strength of the human form, birds in extreme flight and animals. I have a passion for creating pieces that display energy, depth and transformation. I work alongside internationally recognized sculptor Mark Coreth. I don’t choose conventional poses. My work is dynamic and storytelling is paramount. It is the starting point and I want to involve the viewer in the drama of the moment. The process of creating is, to me, just magical. That you can bend some wire, take a lump of clay or other material and suddenly see – an arm, a...

I qualified as an Art Teacher (specialising in sculpture) in Southern Ireland in 1979. After moving to the UK, I set up (and ran for 20 years) an Arts Centre for adults with physical disabilities for a national charity in Leatherhead. Work Modelled clay has historically been my preferred medium as it allows me to experiment more freely with form and texture. However, I also enjoy the challenge of working with resistive materials. Over recent years I have developed a passion for unearthing the inherent gems in wood discovered through the carving process. I enjoy the challenge of finding the...
