Having gained a degree in sculpture in the late sixties I spent the next almost thirty years involved in a variety of commercial, industrial and media projects, including sculptural signage, theatre stage and rock music sets, airport furnishings, and car design and manufacture.
Since then, apart from occasional digressions, I have concentrated on developing my sculpture from my studio in Hove, Sussex.
My interest in sculpture is defined by a passion for the language of form . Somehow, form carries meaning in and of itself, quite apart from any possible ‘literal’ meaning in the imagery. It seems to provide a physical bridge between beauty and logic, as demonstrated in the forms of nature, where every element has purpose and nothing is superfluous, and where movement is both cohesive and expansive, as well as fundamentally economical.
In most of the pieces featuring the human figure I attempt to express aspects of the human condition stripped of all personality and individual history. Despite their monk-like appearance, no ideas of a religious nature are intended. Metaphysical maybe!
In the animal pieces I try to capture some of the essential character of the animal.
