Born and brought up in Belgium, Rosemarie moved to England to study in 1977. She came to sculpture from teaching – French, German and Art – and then working as a freelance translator in the specialist fields of Art and Education. She started working as a sculptor in the mid-1990s, soon moving from mostly figurative work to abstract forms. She works in clay, which is then often cast in plaster, resins or bronze, and she also carves in stone, predominantly alabaster and marble, and wood.

She has always had a strong connection with the abstract form; "I find it gives me the most freedom and allows me the greatest creativity, the form developing organically as I work".

Rosemarie has two different approaches depending on the medium she is working in. When she is carving in stone or wood she is usually completely guided by the piece, the theme emerging slowly as the dialogue evolves. In clay she tends to start working with a specific concept in mind, an idea she wants to convey, developing the three-dimensional form within a visual, sculptural context but letting the concept lead her in her decision-making.

Rosemarie's work celebrates aspirational themes; it is reflective and aesthetic rather than being about instant attention-grabbing and shock value. "With my work I invite the viewer to reflection and contemplation, offering an interval of relief from the strains and hustle and bustle of modern-day living, a time of tranquillity and inspiration."

"I'm very interested in how emotion and other states of mind can be expressed in an abstract form. Some of my work has been exploring 'stillness' – a precious commodity in today's world – and I'm currently working on an exploration of 'acceptance' and 'patience' or 'acceptance and patience' – impelled by recent personal circumstances.

Rosemarie has exhibited in various gardens in the South East, including Wisley, Savill, and Borde Hill, as well as galleries and other indoor and outdoor locations in the South East, including the Brighton Festival HOUSE exhibition and the Artists Open Houses.
