Ian Marshall says that his work is a continuous process of exploring the capabilities of steel, investigating its qualities and using them to implement ideas He works with forging tube and sheet steel and the inspiration for many of his sculptural forms is the human body with the incorporation of holes, folds and crevices.
All the objects on display are hot forged from mild steel, mostly hammered by hand, producing subtle colour variations and beautiful surface textures. The pieces are normally finishes with wax to preserve the colour. Pieces displayed outside may be allowed to rust or else suitably treated to prevent natural rusting.
